KUBERA (VAISARAVANA/ JAMBALA)
Description
Vaisravana is the Lord of the Yakshas and one of the four Deva kings who guard Indra’s paradise at Mount Meru. More commonly known as Kubera or Jambhala, he is often regarded also as Lord of Wealth and Prosperity, and is hugely popular in Nepal and China. Traditionally, his image was often kept in or near treasure boxes. Kubera is always depicted as yellow, and holds a banner in his right hand and a mongoose in his left. The mongoose, as an enemy of snakes, symbolises generosity (the enemy of greed).
