GREEN TARA (NEWARI)
Description
A very beautiful Green Tara in the Newari style, embellished with both silver and 24-carat gold. The Green Tara, manifestation of compassion, the Green Tara emerged from a tear that fell from the left eye of Avalokitesvara while he despaired for the misery of the human condition. Historically, among many incarnations, she was first associated with the the Nepalese princess Brikuti, daughter of King Ansu Verman, who helped bring Buddhism to Tibet when she married the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. Her five-leaved crown represents the five Dhayani-Buddhas, and indeed, the Green Tara is considered the mother of all Buddhas. Her right hand is in ‘charity’ mudra and her left, which is in ‘argument’ mudra, hold the lotus. The Tara’s right leg is lowered, resting on a smaller lotus, ready to step off at any time to bring help. She has two eyes only, unlike her couterpart the White Tara who has seven.
